The island itself cooperates. Roatan’s average temperatures range between 77°F and 88°F, a sea breeze keeps the heat comfortable, and the island stays on Central Standard Time year-round. Spanish is the official language of Honduras, but English is widely spoken on Roatan, and U.S. dollars are accepted across the island alongside the Honduran lempira. Off the course, the water is the main event: Roatan sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and diving, snorkeling, fishing, and sailing are all within easy reach of the south shore. Foreigners have been able to own property in Honduras since 1991; an individual can hold up to 0.72 acres (3,000 square meters), and a Honduran corporation — simple to set up through a local attorney — can own more. Getting There & Around
Roatan’s Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport (RTB) receives direct flights from U.S. cities including Houston, Dallas, Miami, Denver, and Atlanta, with seasonal service from Canada and connections through Central American hubs. From the airport, the drive to Pristine Bay follows the island’s main road east along the south shore toward French Harbor, so arrival is simple even on a first visit. Travelers coming from mainland Honduras can also arrive by domestic flight or by ferry.
On the island, most owners keep or rent a car, and taxis and private car services are easy to arrange. Roatan is about 40 miles long and three to five miles wide, which puts the whole island within day-trip range: West Bay’s beach and West End’s dive village sit at the western tip, and the quieter east end rewards an unhurried drive.
