Oak Ridge is a historic fishing town on the eastern half of Roatan, in Honduras’ Bay Islands, built around a sheltered harbor where houses stand on stilts over the water and boats remain an everyday way to get around. It is the gateway to the island’s quieter, less developed east end, and it suits buyers who want authentic island character, working waterfront, and room to build rather than a resort address.

Living in Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge is one of Roatan’s oldest settlements, and it wears that history openly. The town grew up around fishing and boatbuilding, and daily life is still organized around the harbor: fishing boats coming and going, water taxis threading between docks, neighbors traveling by skiff as naturally as by car. Mangrove canals wind out from the harbor toward the neighboring settlement of Jonesville, and a slow boat ride through those green tunnels remains one of the island’s most distinctive experiences.

Life here runs at a different pace from the island’s west side. There is no resort strip; instead you get an established community, calm protected water, and quick access to the bights and undeveloped coastline of the east end, with the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef offshore. English is widely spoken on Roatan alongside Spanish, and the climate is steady year-round, with average temperatures between 77°F and 88°F and a sea breeze that keeps the island comfortable. Real Estate in Oak Ridge

The Oak Ridge market is defined by water rather than by beachfront resorts, and it looks quite different from the condo inventory of West Bay. Typical offerings include:

  • Harborfront and canal-front homes, including traditional stilt houses with private docks
  • Hillside homes and building lots overlooking the harbor and the sea
  • Larger land parcels toward Calabash Bight, Port Royal, and Camp Bay, suited to a private estate or a long-term hold

Because the east end is less developed, land is more plentiful here than in the island’s established resort corridor, and buyers who value acreage, privacy, and dock access over walk-everywhere convenience tend to find Oak Ridge compelling. Foreigners have been able to own property in Honduras since 1991. An individual can hold up to 0.72 acres in their own name, and a Honduran corporation, which is straightforward to set up, can own larger or multiple holdings. Our FAQs cover the purchase process, closing costs, and ownership structures in detail, and our buying guide walks through each step, from the offer to the Notary Protocol that completes a transaction.

Getting There & Around

Roatan’s Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport (RTB) receives direct flights from U.S. cities including Houston, Dallas, Miami, Denver, and Atlanta, along with seasonal connections from Canada and flights from Central American hubs. From the airport, the island’s main road runs east past French Harbour and continues along the spine of the island to Oak Ridge, so the trip is a single straightforward drive.

Roatan is roughly 40 miles long and three to five miles wide, which keeps distances manageable: the west side’s beaches, dive shops, and restaurants are a day trip, not a commitment. Within Oak Ridge itself, much of daily movement happens on the water. Water taxis cross the harbor and run the mangrove canals, and many homes are reached as easily by dock as by driveway. A vehicle is useful for supply runs and airport trips, while a boat opens up the reef, the bights, and the east end’s outer coastline. The island stays on Central Standard Time year-round, so there is never a clock change to plan around.
