French Harbor is a working harbor town on the south shore of Roatan, in Honduras’ Bay Islands, roughly midway along the island’s 40-mile length. It is one of Roatan’s principal commercial centers, with marinas, shopping, banking, and gated residential communities within a few minutes of one another. For buyers who value everyday convenience — provisioning, boat slips, and a short drive to the international airport — French Harbor is one of the most practical places on the island to own a home.

Living in French Harbor

French Harbor has earned its living from the sea for generations, and it still feels like a town with a job to do. Long a base for Roatan’s fishing fleet, its protected harbor now also shelters marinas serving sailboats, sport-fishing boats, and cruising yachts. That maritime backbone gives the area a different rhythm from the resort-oriented west end of the island: this is where residents run errands, not just where visitors pass through.

Day to day, the convenience is the point. Because the town functions as a commercial hub for the island, groceries, hardware, banking, and services are close at hand rather than a cross-island drive away. English is widely spoken, and U.S. dollars are accepted alongside the Honduran lempira, which keeps ordinary transactions simple for North American residents. Families have a nearby option in NuNa Academy in French Cay, one of the two schools most expatriate children on Roatan attend. And because the town faces the south shore, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — home to more than 500 species of fish — is minutes away by boat for diving, snorkeling, or fishing. The climate does its part as well: average temperatures range between 77°F and 88°F year-round, tempered by a steady sea breeze.

Real Estate in French Harbor

The French Harbor market covers a wider spread than most island neighborhoods. Gated communities in and around town offer single-family homes and villas with the security and infrastructure many foreign buyers look for. Condominiums — some with harbor or marina views — suit owners who want a lock-and-leave residence or a rental-ready investment; you can see what is currently available among our condo listings. Hillside home sites above the harbor capture water and reef views, while waterfront parcels with dock potential appeal to owners who want their boat steps from the door.

Ownership here is straightforward for foreigners. Non-Hondurans have been able to own property in Honduras since 1991; an individual can hold up to 0.72 acres, and a Honduran corporation — simple to establish — can own more. Annual property taxes are low by North American standards, at around 0.35% of a property’s registered value. Our guide to buying with us walks through the purchase process step by step, and our FAQs cover the most common questions about ownership, closing costs, and residency.

Getting There & Around

French Harbor’s mid-island position is one of its strongest practical arguments. Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport (RTB) is a short drive along the island’s main road, with direct flights from U.S. cities including Houston, Dallas, Miami, Denver, and Atlanta, plus seasonal connections from Canada — many owners reach the island on a single nonstop flight.

On the island, the main road puts both ends of Roatan within reach: the beach at West Bay and the dive village of West End lie to the west, while the quieter east end stretches out in the other direction. Taxis and rental cars are readily available, and for boat owners the harbor itself is the transport hub. For a broader picture of island life, see our guide to exploring Roatan.

If French Harbor’s mix of convenience, moorage, and community sounds like your kind of island address, browse our current listings or talk with our team — we live and work on Roatan, and we are glad to help you find the part of the island that fits.
